Q: What is the US Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) and is this at the DI competitive level?

A: US Soccer Development Academy is a National League developed to create a competitive environment for the top Boys U16

and U18 (U14 starting with Fall 2009) soccer teams in the country. BUSA is one of 60 inaugural members when US Soccer

formed the league 2 years ago. This league has grown to 79 clubs accepted as of the 2010 soccer year. Teams in this league

include many of the MLS Junior teams as well as the US national teams in their respective age groups. More information is

available on our website.

Q: Are Players selected for US Soccer Development Academy teams at tryouts?

A: Players that are interested in playing for the USSDA will be evaluated prior to tryouts. Players can be offered spots on the

USSDA teams based on their play in tryouts, but most USSDA roster spots will be filled prior to tryouts. If interested, you

should send in the USSDA player profile form.

Q: What is the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL)?

A: Elite Clubs National League is a newly formed league for the top Girls U15, U16 and U17 teams in the country. BUSA is a

charter member of this league and all of the Elite teams in these age groups will participate.

Q: What is the Region III Premier League?

A: Alabama is Part of US Youth Soccer’s Region III and the AYSA Division I State Champions and State Finalists are

automatically invited to play in the South Central Division of the Region III Premier League. Like the State Champions, the

winners of the RIII Premier League are given an automatic berth to the Region III regional Championships. Winners of the

Regional Championship go to the USYSA National Championships.

Q: Are DI and DII Competitive teams coached by parent coaches?

A: No, Licensed professional coaches are hired for all competitive teams. Staff Directors and coaches are utilized to help cover

any games or practices that the assigned coach may not be able to make due to conflicts.s

Q: How much travel is involved with a competitive team?

A: Travel for competitive teams varies based on the age and level of the team. Typically each team participates in approximately 3

tournaments per season. These could be in-state or out-of-state events. Tournaments are chosen for each team based on what

the staff feels is the most developmentally advantageous for the players. For State League play all teams play 4 home games

and 4 away games. Away games could include travel to Huntsville, Montgomery or Mobile areas.

Q: How do I find out who the coach of a specific team will be?

A: The full list of coaches will be published on the website as soon as the commitments are finalized. Coaches are always subject

to change due to changes in a coach’s personal situation or movement of coaches due to more teams being formed than

anticipated going into tryouts.

Q: Can I participate in other sports?

A: Players are allowed to participate in other sports along with their soccer season. It is our desire, that as a competitive soccer

player, soccer is your primary sport. Playing time in games may be reduced based on participation in the practice sessions. As

availability for practices increases so will playing time in games. This also varies among levels of play, for example, the

demands of a US Soccer Development Academy Player are higher and therefore make it difficult for anyone to participate in

dual sports.

Q: How many times a week do competitive teams practice?

A: Typically, all competitive teams hold two practices per week and participate in SPARQ (Nike Speed, Strength and Agility

training) or EXCEL (soccer skills training) training on a third night. Some situations may require that a team hold additional

practices due to rainouts or as they prepare for a big event such as State Cup Championships.

Q: Where do north and south teams practice?

A: Teams are divided into the North and South only at the U11 and U12 levels. All other teams are designated Elite, Select or

Premier. The North teams typically practice at our Rathmell Complex in the Mountain Brook / Cahaba Heights area. The

South teams typically practice at Heardmont Park fields on Hwy 119 or the 1996 Sports Blast Fields on Hwy 280 near Chelsea.

Q: Does it matter whether I attend tryouts at the North or South venues?

A: Any players participating in the U11 or U12 age groups should attend tryouts for the North or South teams based on which side

of town they want to play on. If a player wants to increase their options, they may tryout for North & South. All other age

groups should attend as many of the tryouts as possible.

Q: Do I need to have my Birth Certificate at tryouts?

A: If you did not play for a BUSA team last year, we need to have a Birth Certificate at tryouts or sent in with the Tryout

registration form.

Q: What if I am not available for the tryout dates?

A: It is hard for us to evaluate a player for a team that can not attend the tryouts. It makes it much easier for us to compare

players that directly compete against each other. If there is a solid reason for having to miss tryouts, contact one of the director

staff so that we may try to evaluate the player prior to tryouts. Most roster spots will be filled by the end of tryouts.

Q: How many tryouts do players need to attend?

A: Players are only required to attend one tryout. However, the more tryouts each player attends the better chance the coaches

have of seeing them at their best. This is especially true for the youngest age groups where there is little difference in the

overall level of play.

Q: How are players notified that they made a specific team?

A: Typically the coach will give them an invitation on the field or immediately following the tryouts. Due to the number of players

involved, many times the invitation has to be given over the phone. Once the coach invites them and a player accepts, a team

manager or representative will handle getting all necessary paperwork filled out.

Q: When are players notified that they made a team?

A: Coaches try to notify the players they want to make an offer to on the field when possible. They then would talk to as many

parents as possible following that tryout session. Due to time others may be called later that evening or the next day. We will

try our best to notify all players, regardless of whether we have a team for them, within one week of the final tryout date. Some

circumstances, such as waiting on a player to make a commitment, may require more time to finalize some teams or to be able

to offer a roster spot to a give player. You should always feel free to call the office at 981-6629 to see where a player stands.

Q: Will I be notified if I don’t make a team and of what options are available for my child?

A: All players will be notified one way or another of their acceptance to a team. If a situation arises where we can not place a

player on a BUSA competitive team we will do our best to contact other clubs to see if there is room on their competitive team,

or we may suggest a recreational option.

Q: Can I still play soccer for my High School team if I am on a BUSA competitive team?

A: Players that are in the 9

provide opportunities for players that don’t have an opportunity or choose not to play HS Soccer. Players are expected to

rejoin their team at the conclusion of the HS season. For Physical and social reasons as well as consistency with BUSA’s

competitive teams, we do not recommend players playing for their High School prior to their 9

that team budgets are based on the number of rostered players, anyone that chooses to play HS soccer during their 7

th grade or higher always have the option to play for their High School team in the Spring. We do try toth grade year. Based on the factth or 8th

grade years will still be responsible for spring team fees.

Q: How much does it cost to play on a BUSA competitive team?

A: Cost varies based on the age and level that your child plays on. You will be given an estimated cost sheet for all ages and levels

when you attend tryouts. Once you are offered a spot on a specific team, you will be given a more detailed budget for that team

that can be used to base your decision on.

Q: When does each season startup and end?

A: Commitment to a competitive soccer team is for a full year until tryouts the following year. The fall season begins with team

camp (dates are on the website) and ends for most teams in mid-November to the first weekend in December. Spring season

begins in early February and ends prior to Memorial weekend unless your team is attending a tournament that weekend
